The City Name field identifies a city name associated with the ZIP Code by the USPS. There may be several different city names associated with a particular ZIP Code. If so, the ZIP Code will appear in several different records, each with a different city name.

The ZIP Code field lists only valid 5-digit ZIP Codes currently defined by the USPS. Obsolete ZIP Codes which have been retired from service by the USPS are not included in this database. A particular ZIP Code may appear in more than one record if the USPS has defined more than one city name for that ZIP Code.

The area code is the "most prevalent" area code for that one ZIP Code. If multiple area codes apply to that one ZIP Code, only the primary area code is listed. Overlay area codes are not listed.

The County FIPS code is a 5-digit numeric field containing a unique numeric identification assigned to that county by the US government. The County FIPS code field and the County Name field identify the "most prevalent" county for the 5-digit ZIP Code listed in a given record.

The Preferred? flag can have one of three states, which indicate how that name can be used for delivery of mail to the associated ZIP Code. The three states are:

  • P - This is the preferred city name for this ZIP Code
  • A - This city name is approved (but NOT preferred) for this ZIP Code
  • N - The city name is NOT approved for mail delivery to this ZIP Code

A particular ZIP Code always has exactly one "preferred name" record but also may have additional "alternate name" records.

The one preferred name record has the preferred field set to "P", while all alternate city name records have the preferred field set to "A" or "N". Note that in some cases a particular city name may be preferred for some ZIP Codes but an alternate city name for other ZIP Codes.

The time zone field always contains the standard time zone designation for a particular ZIP Code. If that ZIP Code falls within a political entity which participates in Daylight Saving Time (DST) during the summer months, the DST field is set to "Y". Otherwise the DST field is set to "N".

The latitude and longitude fields contain the geographic coordinates in degrees of the geographic centroid of the ZIP Code area. ZIPList5 Max documentation includes a tutorial and equations for calculating the distance in miles between ZIP Codes using latitude and longitude.

The MSA field contains the Metropolitan Statistical Area code, if any, in which the ZIP Code lies. The MSA is assigned by the US Government.

The PMSA field contains the Primary Metropolitan Statistical Area code, if any, in which the ZIP Code lies. The PMSA is assigned by the US Government.

The City Name Abbreviation field contains the United States Postal Service "official" abbreviation for the city name in those cases where the city name exceeds 13 characters. For those cities where the name is 13 or fewer characters this field is blank.

The Market Area field contains the three-digit Market Area code in which the ZIP Code lies.

The ZIP Code type field identifies special ZIP Codes used for PO Boxes, companies, or the military.

The CBSA field contains Core Based Statistical Area code, if any, in which the ZIP Code lies.

The Division field contains the CBSA division code, if any, in which the ZIP Code lies.

The Population field contains the Census 2012 population for the ZIP Code.
